Every language has a little word for a big lesson. This lesson is the basis for Due Diligence, Law, Accounting, Private Investigation, and it is a personal mantra in the vocabulary of many successful people; it is merely, "pay attention." My reflection at this time of the year leads me to a guiding principle that we at TrustMakers.com strive to teach our readers and clients. Your aptitude for paying attention determines the protection that comes to you through awareness. If there were universal New Year's resolutions, this could surely be one of them.

Awareness is a "state," and that state refers to an ever-present journey through the mind. We are not speaking about paranoia. We mean the balance of consciousness that propels you with wisdom; living in this state is an art.

As this is the time of year for reflection, it is appropriate to first thank all of our subscribers and clients for another wonderful year at TrustMakers.com. Thanks to you, my job is interesting and challenging, and I enjoy striving to help as many clients as possible. You have my continuing assurance that we will strive to continue the quality of TrustMakers.com and we vow to make a positive difference to those who come along our pathway.

I would like to suggest that all of us position our efforts into living in a state of awareness in the New Year. It may sound a bit esoteric, but it is an essential aspect of Asset Protection.

After a mid-town meeting, I took a walk through Times Square. In the chaotic holiday whirlwind, I stopped to reflect. I was pondering, maybe even daydreaming, that very soon more than a half million people would come to experience the sights, smells and sounds in this small ten-block area, once known as Longacre Square. This quasi "field of dreams" awareness is a timeless state where the senses are perfect and details enthrall you, yet they do not overwhelm you. Would it be fair to say that if we could live our lives and operate our businesses in this state we would never miss a beat? We want to live just like the holidays, caught up in the lights and the extravaganza 365, but we have to pay attention to the details in every aspect of our lives.

Some days fly by without a significant remembrance. Other days you remember everything, even the insignificant. This day I was viewing personal movie scenes; they seemed scripted and timed out. Reminders of swank hotels, NASDAQ, Nike, Hershey and Coca-Cola surrounded me. I recall a car narrowly missing a staggering drunk, a street-vending woman offering me a smell of her best flowers, and I heard an opera on the Time Square television; there is only one New York City, I thought. I recall these trivial occurrences because my senses lead me to awareness. Some also call it "being in the moment."

The resolution to heighten your personal state of awareness is a good one because you can make it happen at any moment you choose. You can also renew it everyday you awake. When you turn the lights off, you can leave the worries out of your dreams.
