Sometimes Bad Things Come In Big Packages

By Rob Lambert - Email Editor

Date: 25-Oct-2007

Dear Subscriber:

We all know that good things can come in small packages. Those of us in Southern California know that sometimes bad things come in big packages.

As I write this, I am looking out my window at flames moving up a ridge about 15 miles away. The sky is orange from the ashes and smoke. Even though the air is almost unbreathable and the fires seem close, my area has been declared safe, at least for now, and has become a haven for thousands of evacuees. The local harbor and all major stores have their parking lots filled with cars and people wandering aimlessly, hoping that they will have a home to return to.

The fires are bad. The destruction is terrible. I have spent some significant time speaking to the evacuees in my area. Everyone faced the same difficult process when told that they had to evacuate. Many were given less than an hour to get out of their homes. Every person was forced to pick their most significant possessions and then cram them into their cars and leave.

I was faced with this process nearly 15 months ago when I received an evacuation order due to a Tsunami. Fortunately nothing happened; however, we did have to load our car and leave. This was difficult at best and forced Kelli and I to come up with an evacuation plan. I think you all should. We know what we need to survive in the short term and the long term. Our three cats still top the list.

I suggest that each of you come up with a plan. If you need help, you can get suggestions and a helpful brochure from your local Red Cross office. I also urge each of you to take your video camera and complete a comprehensive video inventory of your possessions. Then send this tape to a relative in another city. This video will help you if disaster strikes. It is a terrible thing, but money, precious metals, jewels ,and nearly everything else vaporizes in a hot fire…even if those items are housed in a “fireproof” safe. The only way to document an insurance claim may be this video inventory.

Please take a look at Kelli’s blog. She and her writing partner and pianist, Andrew, were out and have an interesting perspective on the fires in particular and natural disaster in general. It is a worthwhile visit.

Have a healthy and protected week.
