Online Dating: Game On For Professional Takers

Dear Subscriber:
The message of this newsletter is simple: Don’t brag about what you have.
A good Plan is technology based. It either works, or it doesn’t based on the structure. All decent Asset Protection structures work because of the legal machinery put in place, and no particular Plan should depend upon or be based on stealth or secrecy. In fact, I always say to clients that they should assume that their entire Plan falls into the hands of their opponents. Even so, the Plan should still work.
Yes, secrecy is never the foundation of a Plan. With that said, secrecy and stealth are very good things. Secrecy does help. If the only people who need to know about a particular offshore account are yourself, your tax advisors and our friends at the IRS, keep it that way.
Every person with wealth to protect should examine the message that they are sending. Remember, there is a huge number of people in the world who exist to separate you from what you have, using almost any technique or process (legal and illegal) that you can think of, and many you can’t think of.
This is particularly true in the online dating world. In the last two weeks I have had four clients (with lots of assets) tell me that they are looking for a new mate. I didn’t know that this was such a big deal; but, after some checking, let me assure you that it is. Just ask Dr. Phil (who is the spokesman for Match.com).
I asked one of my clients who was looking for a new friend on Match.com how it was going, and if I could look at her profile. Now, this is a beautiful lady with a big beautiful house, lots of money, cars and, yes, even the tell-tale airplane. She has no problem meeting people; however, she just wanted to accelerate the process using the Internet. She said she was meeting quite a few men.
When I looked at her profile I noticed that her hobby was “handling her investments” and “flying her personal plane.” HOLY COW. Most of the people on this type of online community don’t have two nickels to rub together. How do you think they are going to respond to the chance to meet a good looking lady who ADVERTISES on a match making site that she has lots of money? No wonder there have been lots of takers.
After I removed myself from the ceiling, I called her and the profile was quickly changed. I bet she is getting a lot fewer calls now; however, I also bet that the ones who are contacting her are a lot better (or at least safer) folks.
My message is to watch out in the unsafe and predatory online world. Less is more. Keep your cards close to your chest, and don’t relinquish your privacy unless and until you need to.
Have a healthy and protected week.
